In this phenomenological study, the challenges that Filipino English major students faced when analyzing literary texts were explored. Through in-depth interviews with participants from the University of San Jose-Recoletos, several key factors contributing to these
challenges were identified, including a lack of literary analysis and motivation However, the study also revealed that students approached these challenges in diverse ways, such as engaging in self-study by re-reading the text through researching the backgrounds of authors, and
exploring different approaches to literary analysis. The researchers recommended a shared responsibility among learners, instructors, and curriculum designers to address these challenges. Suggestions included early exposure to literary texts in the education curriculum,
a well-designed and appropriate curriculum for learners, and individualized support for students' needs and capacities. Ultimately, these strategies could improve students' attitudes toward literature and enhance their proficiency in literary analysis.
